1929, Peugeot 190 S, MA-15-31

The Peugeot 190 S was bought in Madeira by Herberto Mendes in 2020 (registered on 29-01-2021) from a well-known collector who, for health reasons, sold his car collection.
The first French registration was dated January 1, 1930. The Portuguese one appeared on May 27, 2002.
It had been purchased in France and registered with the national license plate.
The new owner was interested in this car because of its peculiar characteristics: a wooden frame and canvas-covered bodywork, accelerator pedal in the middle, in-line gearbox, in addition to presenting a very in-line appearance from the 1920s of the past 20th century.
The previous owner had started the restoration but did not complete it.
So, when he acquired it, he immediately started putting it into operation.
First, all the mechanics. Then the electrical part was completely revised. And, finally, came both the plate flattener and painter (this in the few plates it has).
It kept the original interiors and canvas, which gives it a kind of patina.
He didn't have to look far for parts, because that job had been done by the previous owner.
The restoration was completed in May 2022, just in time for the participation in the "Madeira Classic Car Revival 2022".
The Peugeot Tipo 190 was launched at the end of 1928 and sold together with the light model Peugeot 5CV, which was based on the Quadrilette, a great market success of the 1920s, and which it was supposed to replace.
It is a small vehicle, but more traditional compared to the previous ones.
It was also produced in roadster and convertible versions.
The 190 model was equipped with the same 695 cc inline 4-cylinder engine as the 5CV model, which developed 14 horsepower and could take the car to a top speed of 60 km/h.
In essence, this is a successful model, with more than 33,000 units produced. In 1929 its successor, the Peugeot 201, was launched and the 190 remained in production until 1931.
The 190 was one of the last Peugeot models to be produced with a wooden frame, using traditional carpenters.
It was named that way because it was the 190th project developed by Peugeot.
At the time, however, this nomenclature was not widespread among buyers and even in the catalogues, it appeared as "La 5CV Peugeot" (Peugeot 5CV). That all changed when that model was replaced.
The models that followed the 190 used in their designation a set of three digits with a zero in the middle, starting with the 201, abandoning the numerical sequence of the projects.
Model size is now related to the first digit: 20x class cars are smaller than 30x class cars, which are smaller than 40x class cars, and cars of the same class are replaced by the next ordinal number in the last digit. That is, the 201 was replaced by the Peugeot 202 and so on.
